Google add location display feature in its phone app for emergency

Google has added a new safety-oriented feature in its Phone app that can potentially save many lives in cases of emergency. Thanks to the feature, every time an emergency number is dialed, users will instantly get details of their location on the screen.

In case a person finds it necessary to call an emergency number, say 911, a location card will appear on the screen containing information about the address, co-ordinates and small map preview of their location.
This will make it significantly easier for people who are in unfamiliar areas, to tell their exact location to the emergency personnel on the line. Also, it can be highly convenient for people who have suffered a medical injury and are unfamiliar with their surroundings.
Currently, the feature is available for Pixel, Nexus, Android One and Google Play Edition devices running Android 6.0 or higher..

Google Maps has started showing a travel time graph for directions

Google has quietly rolled out a feature in its Maps for Android users where they can see a graph on the best time to travel. Reportedly available in the US and Britain at the moment, the new travel time graph — among with a common direction route — has bars for half an hour before, and a few hours after the current time.
There’s also a dotted line just above the bars with a time indicated, Android Police reported on Saturday. This helps users not only how to get somewhere or how long the trip should take but when is the best time to leave (highlighted in either green, yellow, or red to indicate current traffic conditions).
“The new feature is only available for Maps users on Android, and it pops up when you input directions,” The Verge reported. “Along with showing you the usual estimated time and distance, a new bar graph will also show an estimate of both how long it would have taken a half hour earlier and how long it will take in the next few hours,” the report added.
Google recently rolled out a new home screen on Maps for Android, specifically designed for users in India. The new home screen loads fast so that millions of people across the country who come online can discover and share great places, even during patchy internet connections.
Now, when users open Google Maps app, they will instantly see a directions card with different modes of transportation. If users like to access a certain route while on the go without using data, they can save the route to be used offline. After users update to the latest version of Google Maps, they will see newly added shortcuts on the home screen that will help them explore the app in just a few quick taps.

Facebook Messenger Lite for Android Finally Launched in India

Months after Facebook launched a lite version of Messenger, the company has finally brought it to India. Called Messenger Lite, the app is now available for Android smartphones users in the country via Google Play.
Much like the Facebook Lite app, Messenger Lite is aimed at users with old, or entry-level smartphones. Additionally, the app is optimised to work on slow Internet networks, addressing another issue that continues to cripple many users in India.

The Messenger Lite app weighs just 10MB, compared to the usual Messenger app on Android which runs north of 40MB, and the ios app, which is more than a 300MB download. Like Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite is not available for iPhone users.
Messenger Lite app offers most of the features that you expect from the regular app - ability to send and receive text, photos, links, emojis, and stickers. However, if you want to make video calls or send your friends money, a feature that is available in select regions you will have to switch to the marquee Messenger app.
Unlike Facebook Lite, which saw India as one of the launch markets, the social juggernaut took its time in bringing the Messenger Lite app to the country. First unveiled in October last year for five select regions, the pared-down version of Facebook Messenger made its way to over 130 country in globally.
Existence of "lite" variants of regular apps from Google, Facebook and Microsoft

underscore one of the major challenges Silicon Valley companies are facing as they work on expanding their user base in emerging markets.
That said, power users might also find Messenger Lite app interesting. With Facebook increasingly expanding Messenger app to bring you new features, and extensions, the company has received heat from many users who believe that the company is compromising their experience. Messenger Lite app, in comparison, remains much cleaner. For now.
